All phones not registered

we've moved offices. We have a new cable modem. The system is very erratic... at first we could make calls - worked fine, but when we answered calls the caller couldn't hear us.

Now, none of our phones will register.

We have contacted the ISP, they say nothing is different between the two systems -- as a side point, our backup VONAGE line is working perfectly. ((Yes, we disconnected that line to ensure it wasn't interferring).

Any suggestions??

RE: All phones not registered

Have you tried to register using a different port, other than 5060?

The audio issue sounds like a STUN problem. Do you have it? try removing it. you don't have it? try it.

Using wireshark as pachet sniffer you should be able to address the cause.

RE: All phones not registered

Certainly sounds like a router/nat issue,
Also try any sip alg off or on in the router to see if it makes a difference.
Ensure that each local extension has its own unique sip port.
Use pbxes.org for registration rather than an individual server address.
I have had a problem like this (voip bad but PCs ok) fixed by isp updating the router (maybe firmware).

RE: All phones not registered

thanks all -- the following is just to summarize for others finding the same problems.

In this case we started with all phones registering, outgoing calls working, incoming would ring, but we couldn't answer. in an effort to try to figure out why the "off hook/answer" message wasn't getting back to pbxes to then have the system connected the call I turned off the advanced SIP support -- which resulted in no phones registering from behind the router.

Once turned back on SIP support, we were back to all phones registering, outgoing calls working, incoming would ring, but still we couldn't answer.

The router we couldn't get to work was a Dlink DIR-615, HW E3 and Firmware 5.10

We have since rolled back to our old router which is Model EBR-2310 Hardware Version: B1 Firmware Version: 2.01

The only other difference is that we have two different cable connections, the 615 was on a 8x1 with dynamic IP, while the working dlink is on a cable connection 15x2 with 5 static IPs assigned... the cable company SWEARS there is no difference between the two modems/configurations - which I would agree with, because the vonage line worked fine behind the 8x1.

Again, just trying to provide information for the next poor slob trying to figure out the same problem.

We are going to do some additional troubleshooting later, after hours.

RE: All phones not registered

Best of luck, please update us all with your findings and (hopefully) the resolution.
My home broadband is Virgin cable, I had various problems with my (expensive) Draytek router that I never got to the bottom of, but a very cheap old Azurewave router (£5 off fleabay) works a treat with just the basic configuration.

RE: All phones not registered

You didn't provide the configuration from your equipment.

Are you using a STUN server?
What type of NAT you have?

RE: All phones not registered

Hey Steve,

Will the cable company allow you to swap routers between connections?

For this to work, they will have to unshackle the MAC addresses of the routers from their CMTS equipment. Some cable companies have configured their CMTS units to do this automatically, if you power off their cable modems for a few minutes. Others oblige their techs to do this manually.

In case they are unable to help, you might have to swap the MAC addresses of the two routers by cloning them. Don't forget to swap them back after your tests are over.

Let us know how that works.
